Friends of BCAS - Adoptions & Newsletter [6/16/13]

Hello, fellow Friends of BCAS volunteers!

 Announcements

• DOG WALKER ALERT: Please be cautious while walking your dogs, as a groundhog has taken up residency beneath the sheds behind the shelter. He doesn't seem to be overly fearful off dogs, so make sure you have a good hold of your pup when you're around the sheds.

• VOLUNTEERS ASSISTING CUSTOMERS: We know that sometimes the shelter staff can get very busy and that there are times where customers are lining up to be helped. Sometimes customers can be accidentally overlooked, however, and this can lead to unhappy experiences and lost adoptions. Volunteers, if you are aware of a potential adopter or other visitor/customer who has been waiting for a long timefor assistance (20 minutes or more), please politely ask at the front desk to speak with an employee in charge, such as a shift supervisor, an Animal Advocate, or the manager, and bring this customer's needs to their attention.

• FREE MICROCHIP REGISTRY: Here's a great resource for owners of pets who have been microchipped. This is a free microchip registry offered by a non-profit organization. Many official registries offered by manufacturers of the microchips are subscription-based or require a fee, so this is a great opportunity to make sure your pet's chip is effective in a way that costs you nothing! http://www.found.org/?utm_source=hsus&;utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=microchip-month-6-9-13 (Each microchip has a unique ID number that is detected when the chip is scanned. This ID number refers to information stored in remote databases such as this one. If your chip's not registered somewhere, it's 100% useless!)

• BOSCO MEMORIAL TREE: Bosco, a long-term and beloved canine resident of BCAS, was peacefully put to sleep a few weeks ago due to chronic health issues. Volunteer Dee Curry took the initiative to have Bosco cremated and a memorial plaque placed behind the shelter in the shade of a pine tree. A huge thank you to Dee for making this memorial happen, and to the other volunteers who supported the effort, financially or otherwise. We may also be able to use this area to place markers of remembrance for other dearly departed shelter pets.

• FELINE AIDS: Ever wonder about FIV+ cats? Are they really safe, and should people consider adopting them? (Hint: The answer is yes!) Check out this article on FIV+ cats written by a vet to learn a little more about Feline AIDS: http://www.vetstreet.com/our-pet-experts/why-this-vet-thinks-fiv-positive-cats-make-great-adoptees

 Happy Tails - Adoption Updates

• Dusty the gray and white tabby boy was adopted a couple of years ago. Dusty was known as Tubby at the shelter, and he was petrified! He sat in the shelter for months and months before BCAA took him, renamed him "William" and eventually adopted him out to a family who then named him Dusty. Dusty seems pretty happy in his new home. Looks like he's made some new friends too!

• Tucker the shorthaired tuxedo kitty was adopted a couple of years ago, but I'll always remember him because he was known to all the volunteers as a crazy kitty! He was definitely frustrated in his cage, and would play very roughly and generally act like a spaz, and I was afraid he wouldn't get adopted. The family of a volunteer decided they loved him though, and he's turned out wonderfully. They say, "He's an amazing cat, he's patient, calm & affectionate. He loves kids; even when they're rowdy it doesn't faze him. He always climbs into the tub when the adopter's grandson takes a bath, he absolutely loves kids - so cute."

• Abby the gorgeous siamese mix was adopted earlier this year. Here's a note from her adopters! "Here's Abby's picture. She's a great addition to our family. She and Bella, our 3 year old shepherd are getting along very well. Thank you for all you do to help a stray like Abby become a treasured pet."

Friends of BCAS - Adoptions & Newsletter [6/10/13]

Hello, fellow Friends of BCAS volunteers!

 Monthly Stats & Kudos

Volunteer Stats for May 2013:
Volunteer hours: 616 (-37% from April)
Volunteer visits: 327 (-20% from April)
Note: April included our huge Pet Fest volunteer hours.

Great Big Thanks to the Following Volunteers:
Marlena Wszolek for doing an incredible job marketing our long-term dogs.  Her online outreach and stunning posters have attracted many adopters to the shelter.   Marlena is a great example of how you can have a major impact on saving lives with spending very little time at the shelter. Thank you Marlena for helping dogs like Hoss, Ladie, Snuggles, Dusty Rose and Jake find homes!

Linda Goodstein, Reggie Arey, Judy Witt and Barbara Moos for taking on the Shelter Tour program and providing an enjoyable experience to what probably already amount to a hundred or so little kids (plus their parents) since the beginning of this year! Extra special thanks to Linda for taking on the role of Tour Guide Coordinator, and to Reggie for doing the same in Linda's absence. Your tours are a wonderful way of providing a positive impression of our shelter and the merits of adoption and responsible pet ownership to the public, and good PR is just one more step in continuing to help homeless animals find loving forever homes! Thank you :D

• BOTTLE BABIES NEED CARETAKERS! The shelter has several litters of bottlefeeder kittens, and the staff are often unable to handle the large volume of lil hungry babies needing feeding all on their own. All volunteers are encouraged to check with a Vet Tech to see if there are any baby kittens needing feeding while you're at the shelter. Foster homes are always, always appreciated as well, and if you're interested in taking a kitten or a litter home temporarily, please talk to the front desk!

• SICK CATS NEED FOSTER HOMES! Please contact BCAA Felines or the shelter directly to help nurse sick cats back to health. The shelter's Sick cat room has recently been overflowing, which puts these cats in danger for euthanasiaas sick cats can not be quarantined in any other area of the shelter. BCAA Felines and BCAS pretty much always have a need for foster homes for sick cats needing a quiet home, regular medication and good food until they're better again, so please contact BCAAF ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or contact the shelter directly (info here:http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/NJ148.html) to offer your help!

View the flyer here: http://www.mediafire.com/view/uyk49ve5o1vcp93/Macy's_Shop_for_a_Cause.pdf. Please help us spread the word far and wide! Friends of BCAS - Adoptions & Newsletter [6/2/13]

Hello, fellow Friends of BCAS volunteers!

 Announcements

• CAT SPACE ON "RED" ALERT!!! The full effects of kitten season has finally hit BCAS, and our shelter has now COMPLETELY run out of space for incoming cats as of last week. This puts the current resident felines in grave danger if space is not alleviated through adoptions and rescues. Our volunteers, citizen allies and partnered rescues have been working hard to get as many cats adopted, fostered and rescued as possible, but more help is always needed!

Share Our Plea for Help: Please share our adoptable pet listing (here:http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/NJ148.html) with everyone you know and spread the word that space will be critical for cats throughout the summer!

 - Foster a Cat with BCAS: Contact BCAS directly at 609-265-5073 or by speaking to someone in person at the front desk about fostering shelter cats.

 - Foster a Cat with BCAA Felines: BCAAF has been the #1 biggest rescue supporter for our shelter for the past several years and they've saved hundreds of feline lives with
their network of foster homes and pet store adoptions. BCAAF ALWAYS needs foster homes to continue saving cats. Contact them directly at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it  or fill out a volunteer application at www.BCAAofNJ.org to open your home to a cat in need.

Just some examples of some shelter cats who could use help!

• DOG SPACE ON "ORANGE" ALERT: As of late last week word got to us that dog kennel space at BCAS is very nearly at full capacity. If you were thinking of adopting a pup, now is a great time! If there's a particular pet you just couldn't bear to see in danger, now is the time to speak to the front desk and put a Last Resort on that pet. Everyone, please help us spread the word of our shelter's many great, adoptable dogs to your friends, neighbors and rescues you might know! Our adoptable animals can be viewed here:http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/NJ148.html.

• BOTTLE BABIES NEED CARETAKERS! The shelter has several litters of bottlefeeder kittens shelter has lots of bottle babies and the staff are often unable to handle the volume of lil kittens needing feeding all on their own. All volunteers are encouraged to check with a Vet Tech to see if there are any baby kittens needing feeding while you're at the shelter. Foster homes are always, always appreciated as well, and if you're interested in taking a kitten or a litter home temporarily, please talk to the front desk!

• CAT VOLUNTEER REMINDERS:
 - "V" Sticker: When socializing the kitties, please make sure the cat you pick has the colored "V" sticker on the front of its paperwork to indicate a vet tech has medically cleared the cat.
 - When Cats Go Bad: If a cat displays bad behavior, please report it! Cats who bite or scratch aggressively should be reported to the front desk for everyone's safety. Please report cats who display concerning warning behavior such as a swat or "air bites" to Cat Volunteer Coordinator Jenn ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) so the cats can be re-assessed for a handling rating.
 - Any Questions? If you have any questions about what you should do in a certain situation, please let Jenn (that's me!) know so I can help you out.

• LOW-COST SPAY/NEUTER CAT CLINIC: Spay Our Strays monthly low-cost feline clinic is open to everyone for $35 per kitty for spay/neuter surgery, distemper, rabies, and eartipping for ferals. Clinics are held in Lindenwold, NJ, and visits are by appointment only. You can see the most up-to-date clinic date list on their website at www.SOSClinic.org. View/Download the flyer here:https://www.mediafire.com/view/zj3d19bg66h72co/CSTAR_SOSClinicFlyer_JunJulAug2013.pdf.Fixing our pets, strays and feral cats is an essential step to controlling your community's and your shelters' cat populations, and helps save thousands of lives from death by shelter overcrowding.

• HELP US PLACE DONATION BOXES! Donation boxes are one of our biggest fundraisers, but we have too few people who are willing to help us out with them and lots of boxes left over! If you'd like to take a box and place it at a store in your area please contact Penny ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ). We use our donations to help pay for extra medical care for shelter animals, provide educational materials to the public, provide materials and supplies to our own volunteers, and even pay for the endless stream of office supplies we use.

• PERSONAL PLEA FOR HELP: I am looking for a few very detail-oriented, computer-savvy people who don't mind a little work to help me out with an ongoing stream of volunteer projects. My personal life just got rather busier and it's left me with less time to take care of the large variety of little things that FOBCAS needs done. Tasks may includeresearch on related animal advocacy topics, creative document creationfunctional document maintenance, and other organizational-type jobs. I wish I could pay you, but all you'll get is my massive amount of gratitude and the satisfaction of helping the helpless (that's me-- what, you thought I meant the animals? :D). Email me at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it  if you're interested.

• FOBCAS NEEDS A HOUSEKEEPER: We're looking for one or two very tidy individuals to help us keep our portions of the Multi-Purpose Room orderly. Most of our stuff is already sorted and stored, but we can definitely use someone to help us keep it that way! Qualified individuals must have a good personal sense of organization, must be able to take direction, and must be able to visit the shelter about once a week. Email Jenn ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) if you'd like to help!

• JIM CROSBY'S DOG SEMINAR WAS GREAT! Extra special thanks to dog behavior expert Jim Crosby for the engaging seminar he held for us at the shelter on 5/20/13! Many of our volunteers walked away feeling much more well-informed about troubling behavior and aggressive tendencies, and we all appreciated the opportunity to learn. We hope you can visit us again soon :)

• MUTT STRUTT EVENT SUCCESS! FOBCAS attended the Mutt Strutt event in Medford on Saturday 6/1/13 with the help of the following awesome volunteers: Jean leading the FOBCAS table, Tracey leading the Kiss-A-Bull booth, and Tara, Trudy, Rose, Marta, Elaine, Becky and Jackie helping out however they were needed :) Thank you, ladies!

• SENIOR EVENT SUCCESS! FOBCAS visited the senior community event at the Masonic Home earlier this week, with great results. Lots of visitors were interested in the Free Pets for Seniors adoption program offered by the shelter, many curious visitors went away with info on how to volunteer, a bunch of FOBCAS t-shirts were sold and we made a great whopping $210 in donations and t-shirt sales, which is great for a single community event. Thank you to all the volunteers involved in this one!

Friends of BCAS - Adoptions & Newsletter [5/19/13]

Hello, fellow Friends of BCAS volunteers!

 Weekly Announcements

• DOG VOLUNTEER UPDATE: As of 5/13/13 Monday, the Yellow dog room is back open to walking dogs and things are pretty much back to normal, except dogs with a "+D" sticker on their chart may still not be walked. Volunteers should still (and always) be aware of symptoms of illness in any of the animals, and fill out a Sick Slip and give it to the front desk if anything is suspected (Sick Slips are located on top of the badges by volunteer sign-in).

• DO US A FAVOR / LOBBY TV: Volunteers, if the TV in the lobby isn't on during public hours, please do us a favor and switch it on :) You should only have to hit the power button for the TV and the DVD player, and after a minute the Adoptable Animals videos (the same ones you find on our Youtube page) should start playing. Penny and I try to catch it when we're there, but we're not there every day. Thanks!

• ACC BEEF & BEER FUNDRAISER: Atlantic County Canines dog rescue is holding their 1st Annual Beef & Beer fundraiser on 6/9 from 4-6 PM at Mickey and Minnie's Inn, 733 W. White Horse Pike, Cologne, NJ. ACC is one of the more frequent rescuers of BCAS and local dogs and they deserve our support! Admission is $20 and includes a whole lot of food and drinks, plus they've got raffles and auctions. Check out their Facebook page for more info:https://www.facebook.com/AtlanticCountyCanines.

• FUN WAYS TO MINI-FUNDRAISE! One family helped raise money for FOBCAS at their garage sale by "adopting" out their stuffed toys for a donation, seen below. Their donation and 100% of any funds you help us raise will go directly to supporting our shelter's animals! There are lots of fun ways you can help raise a little extra money, like "adopting" out stuffed animals, a lemonade stand, a penny drive, etc.You can make a donation to us through Paypal or by check (see details athttp://www.friendsofbcas.org/about-us). Contact us directly for alternate donation methods :)

• BCAS NEEDS TOWELS: BCAS is running a little low on towels and could use some more. Towels of any size are accepted, but very thin or ratty towels cannot be used. Check out the shelter's full item donation wishlist here for more needed items:http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/NJ148.html.

• NEXT SHELTER TOUR AVAILABLE! The next scheduled tour of BCAS is Monday, 6/3 from 6-7 PM and is open to anybody curious about the shelter!Learn about the basics of an animal shelter, ask questions, and discuss age-appropriate topics such as spay/neuter, pet overpopulation, and the importance of being a responsible pet owner. Attendees will also get to visit with some of the shelter's adoptable pets. Reservations and more information can be found here:http://bcastours.eventbrite.comThese tours are intended for general informational purposes and are not a part of the steps to volunteer or adopt. People interested in volunteering/adoption should visit www.FriendsofBCAS.org or directly contact the shelter respectively.

• COMMUNITY EVENT SUCCESS: Thanks to Elaine M. and Trudy B. for representing FOBCAS at the Security Awareness event held at Holiday Village in Mt. Laurel last Wednesday. Elaine let attendees know one of the best deterrents for burglary is owning a dog! These events are an important way to spread the word of the shelter's presence and we can always use more help. Contact Jean S. at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it  to help out at future community events.

• HOLIDAY CLOSING: Just a reminder to our volunteers that Monday 5/27/13 is a holiday and the shelter is closed for the day.

 Happy Tails - Adoption Updates

• Poco (aka Bailey) the sweet B&W pit mix was adopted after nearly 9 months of waiting at BCAS. We recently received a brief update on how she's doing with her new family:
"This is Bailey (formerly known as Poco) with her new sisters! She is doing GREAT! A friend of mine from work put the app on her during RC&D's."

http://www.mediafire.com/convkey/77b5/2xkcu70orrx3k2cfg.jpg?size_id=b

• Thor the big 3-year-old pit mix was adopted after only a couple of months at BCAS after being taken away from a very unhappy life with his former owners. Thor has put his past behind him, however, and is now living a great life with his new family! We recently heard about how he was doing:
"I have talked to Thor's family and they sent me new pictures of him. I attached some of them here. They say he is a big mush, and he likes their niece and nephew. They have a pet sitter come in daily while they are at work to care for him. When his mom goes in the bathroom he followers her in and sits and watcher her, lol. When his dad is out he jumps on the couch to sit. He loves running in the yard."

Hello, fellow Friends of BCAS volunteers!

 Weekly Announcements

• DONATION BOXES NEED GOOD HOMES: We have some donation boxes up for adoption! We have four money collection boxes that need placement and monitoring in stores in your area. These boxes have proven to be an excellentway for us to raise funds. Many small business owners from restaurants to garden supply to pet supply stores have been happy to let us place a box on their counter. Volunteers in charge of these boxes are responsible for collecting the funds and turning them in to us on a regular basis. Email Penny at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. • TWITTER EXPERT NEEDED: We're looking for someone to manage our Twitter account and build up a following! We'd like to use Twitter as another avenue of animal advocacy and for the marketing of our shelter's adoptable animals. We don't know how to make a Twitter account great, but if you do, please email Penny at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

• JIM CROSBY DOG BEHAVIORIST TALK @ BCAS: On 5/20 from 5-7 PM Jim Crosby, canine behavior and aggression expert, will be giving a talk and possibly a demo at BCAS. Attendance is limited and RSVPs are required. Out of consideration for other potential attendees, please cancel your RSVP if your plans have changed so that someone else may take your spot. RSVP and further info is here:http://jimcrosbyatbcas.eventbrite.com.

• COMMUNITY EVENTS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: We are looking for folks to host a table for our group and our shelter at various upcoming local events. Community Events Volunteers will set up and man our table, and must be willing to talk to strangers to promote our group and our shelter. These events are a great way to get the word out-- even something as simple as letting people know that our shelter exists and where it is does a great deal of good! Schedules are flexible and shift scheduling is an option. Please email Jean S. at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.  In Memory of Bosco

Over two years ago, 7 dogs had been saved from a hoarding situation by the SPCA and came to BCAS to be temporarily housed until their court cases were settled. The other dogs, including some which you may remember-- Woody, Terry and Ginger, were all ultimately released to adoptive homes or rescue organizations.

The big old mutt left behind was a dog named Bosco. He was a senior guy with a limp and he was slowly going blinder by the day, but he didn't complain. All he wanted was to eat some snacks, take a stroll, and relax. He was a good, happy, pleasant dog who made a LOT of friends during his stay and was a favorite among the staff and volunteers of BCAS, myself included.

Last week, Bosco's age finally caught up to him and he was unable to right himself again after falling down. Bosco was put to sleep last Thursday in the beautiful outdoors on a day with gorgeous weather, warm sunshine and a pleasant breeze. Until the very moment he took his last breath he was surrounded by many of the people that adored him during his stay at BCAS.

We'll miss you, Bosco, but we're glad you've found peace.
